Frequently asked questions

Can I store or lay my Tuff Jug on its side with the Auto Stop Spout installed?

Yes — thanks to our latest design improvements, your Tuff Jug with the Auto Stop Spout installed can now be stored or laid on its side without leaking. Our upgraded seals are 100% airtight, preventing spills while still allowing your jug to withstand environmental changes such as heat expansion or contraction.
For long-term storage, you can also use the included Storage Cap plug, which features an O-ring for a leak-free seal. This option provides extra protection if your jug will be transported, stored for extended periods, or exposed to rough conditions.
Additionally, a Tuff Jug with the Ripper Cap installed securely can also be laid on its side for transport or storage with no issues.
In short: With our new airtight technology, Tuff Jug fuel containers are now truly spill-proof, leak-proof, and side-storage ready.

Will the Tuff Jug collapse with changes in temperature?

Tuff Jug is built from multiple layers of HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), a thermoplastic polymer known for its high strength-to-density ratio. This makes your jug durable, lightweight, and resistant to damage.
With our latest design improvements, Tuff Jug now has airtight seals when used with the Auto Stop Spout or Storage Cap. While this provides excellent leak protection, it also means that extreme temperature swings can cause the jug to expand or contract.
• If your Tuff Jug is less than half full and stored with the Storage Cap sealed tight, rapid temperature changes may cause the jug to temporarily collapse inward.
• To prevent this, we recommend slightly loosening (“backing off”) the Storage Cap any time fuel or liquids are in storage. This allows pressure to equalize safely without risking leaks.
• When in use or during transport, keeping the cap sealed is safe and will maintain a leak-free, airtight seal.
A Tuff Jug with the Ripper Cap installed also forms a tight seal and may need to be “burped” (loosening the cap briefly) to release built-up pressure, especially when stored in hot or fluctuating environments.
In short: Tuff Jug will not collapse under normal use, but if stored airtight and less than half full during extreme temperature swings, you should loosen the Storage Cap slightly to relieve pressure.
